Anca M. Barbu, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Former Harvard surgeon and faculty, Dr. Anca Barbu, MD FACS, arrives to Southern California, bringing with her Ivy League Innovation in treating laryngeal (voice) disorders at Cedars-Sinai Medical Group.
Dr. Barbu is board-certified in Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery and fellowship-trained in Laryngeal Surgery by Dr. Steven Zeitels (the surgeon who operated on Adele, Steven Tyler and numerous other professional vocalists). After completing her fellowship at Harvard under his tutelage, she was offered to join Dr. Zeitels as one of only three laryngeal surgeons in practice at Massachusetts General Hospital. In doing so, Dr. Barbu became the first woman surgeon in the Division of Laryngeal Surgery at the #1 hospital in the U.S. at that time.
In her role as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Barbu taught medical students and over a dozen surgeons in fellowship training who subsequently went on to open their own practice or join academic departments throughout the country. Dr. Barbu is a published author and presenter on innovative treatments of voice disorders in leading medical journals and book chapters. She is a public speaker on multiple laryngeal topics, lecturing as an invited Visiting Professor at national universities, and internationally at numerous conferences on professional panels.
She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and an active member of the American Broncho-Esophagological Association (ABEA), American Laryngological Association (ALA), American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (AAO), and American Medical Association (AMA). Dr. Barbu was elected to serve on one of the national committees for Women in Otolaryngology.
After six years in Boston, Dr. Barbu returns to her hometown of Los Angeles, California to be able to provide her patients here with the same diagnostic skills and surgical acumen that improve quality-of-life and treatment options for patients with voice disorders.
Dr. Barbu is the only surgeon in Southern California who is not only Harvard-trained in her sub-specialty of voice and laryngeal disorders, but has the experience and expertise of being in practice there alongside the top surgeons in the field.
